Before you go to your hairdresser, read those 9 things you need to know before you go to your trials.
They are very helpful and many brides don’t know about them.
So let’s get started!
How to define what face shape you are
Look at your face in the mirror straight.
First, you have to find certain points on your face
- The top of your forehead
- The tip of your chin
- Corners of your forehead
- Where your cheekbones end
- Where your jaw ends in the corner on both sides
Now imagine there are four lines. I illustrated it for you on the girl on the right side.
Keep in mind, you should be standing straight and loking at yourself straight. Ideally put your hair away from the face.
- The forehead line connecting your forehead corners.
- The horizontal center connecting your cheekbones
- The jawline connecting your jaw corners
- The vertical center connecting the top of your forehead and the tip of your chin.
Your face shape is determined by the proportions of the lines.
There are 6 main face shapes: oval, square, round, heart, diamond and rectangle.
Oval face shape
It looks harmonious to the eye because the upper half is about the same big as the bottom half.
You have oval shape if your vertical center is longer than the horizontal center.
Square face shape
All four lines are about the same. The forehead and jawline, as well as horizontal and vertical center lines, have similar length.
Round face shape
It’s less common than you think.
It’s basically like a square, but the vertical center is a bit longer. The shape from a corner of the jaw through the chin to the other jaw corner creates almost a perfect half circle.
Heart face shape
Forehead line is longer than the jawline. Quite often this shape also has a pointy chin.
Diamond face shape
Would be a heart shape with shorter forehead line. This means your forehead line and jawline are quite similar. Your horizontal center line is longer than those two lines.
Rectangle face shape
It looks like stretched oval shape. In comparison to oval shape, the face appears to be even longer.

The most flattering hairstyle for your big day
You should know your face type now, therefore we can talk about the suitable hairstyles.
1. Oval face shape like Taylor Swift
You can wear basically any hairstyle you want. Both short and long, straight or curly, everything will fit you.
Best haircuts: Medium-length hair, light waves, a bob.
Best wedding hairstyles: anything you like!
2. Square face shape like Angelina Jolie
You probably feel like your jawline is too dominant and want to hide it.
You should avoid haircuts that ends exactly at this level. Make it longer- medium or long hair.
If you feel like your forehead line is too dominant, in other words, your forehead is too wide, correct it with bangs.
Don’t wear the bang in the middle though. If you move the bang to one side or the other, you will visually break the forehead.
Best hairstyles: multiple layers, long curls, a short sideways fringe.
Best wedding hairstyles: half up updos or loose hair
3. Round face shape like Kirsten Dunst
Avoid bob haircuts and anything that looks like a helmet on your head. You shouldn’t cut your hair shorter than the level of your chin in general.
What suits you is curling the hair towards outside, longer hair and splitting the bang in the middle.
Best haircuts: long straight hair, a long fringe, a long wavy ponytail.
Best wedding hairstyles: half up updoes or loose hair
4. Heart face shape like Reese Withlerspoon
If you’d like to show your chin, then go with hair that is shorter than the chin.
You will also look good in hair going inside, especially if they are in layers.
Do you know who else is famous for heart face shape? Jennifer Aniston!
Everyone knows her hairstyle from the TV show Friends, when she was working as a waitress. The bob hair with layers going inside was such a great fit to hear face shape, that this hairstyle became iconic.
Best haircuts: medium-length flow, medium-length curl, a side ponytail.
Best wedding hairstyles: loose hair or braids
5. Diamond face shape like Halle Berry
You want to add volume to the top of your head, because your forehead line is shorter, than your horizontal center.
You are the best type for short haircuts, just like Halle Berry used to wear.
Split your bangs on one side or the other, not in the middle.
Best haircuts: medium-length with a side parting, a thick fringe with waves, pixie style.
Best wedding hairstyles: updos and half up updos
6. Rectangle face shape like Sarah Jessica Parker
You want to visually shorten your face, therefore long thick bangs are the perfect solution for you.
On the other hand, you shouldn’t wear long straight hair without any bang or layers.
Best haircuts: long hair with a fringe, medium waves with a fringe, a bob with a fringe.
Best wedding hairstyles: updos, half up updoes and braids with a fringe.
There are also ways to tweak your face shape with a makeup. But we will talk about that next time.
