Whether you didn’t start looking yet or have already visited few bridal shops with no success, this article will give you several ideas, how to pick the best wedding dress for you.
Choosing our one and only dress is quite a difficult task. There are so many dresses with different styles and materials, it might become very confusing.
You should consider several aspects before purchasing the final dress.
- Are they in your budget?
- How do you look and feel like in the dress?
- Are they season appropriate?
- Do they fit the wedding theme?
Let’s go over all these factors.
Are they in your budget?
The first step in finding your dreamy dress process is to find shops, whether online or in your town, where they offer wedding dresses that fit your budget.
In case you don’t know, what price fits your budget, you should make one step back and create a budget for your wedding.
Once you establish this budget, it should be clear, what is the price, you can afford for your dress.
Also, if you find out, that there is not too much money for your wedding dress left, you might consider one or even more ideas, how to save some money. Maybe, if you can save some money elsewhere, you can afford a more expensive dress.
So set your budget first, you don’t want to find the perfect dress just to find out later that they overstep your budget. Or that you have spent way too much money and you can’t afford other things now.
Also, your dress doesn’t need to be super expensive in order for you to feel beautiful and perfect on your big day. The following steps will help you find a dress that will make you feel like that.
How do you look and feel like?
When starting the hunt for your dream dress, it’s convenient to know, what kind of dress fits your body type.
If you want to know your body type, you need to measure your body. Take three measurements: your breast at the widest point, your waist at the narrowest point, and around your hips at the widest point. Make sure to stay horizontal when taking the measurements.
These are the body types you can possibly have:
- Marilyn Monroe (aka Pear or Triangle): bustline is narrow or medium, the waistline is narrow and hips are the widest point
- Naomi Campbell (aka Reversed Triangle): your breasts are the widest part, you also have wide shoulders and narrow hip line
- Kate Moss (aka Rectangle): your bust and hipline are narrow, your body type is slim without distinctive curves
- Catherine Zeta-Jones (aka Apple): the waistline is rather wide, while hipline is rather narrow
- Scarlett Johansson (aka Hourglass): like Marilyn Monroe, your waistline is narrow and hips are rather wide, but you also have wide breasts line
- Adele (aka Plus size): it’s not actually a real body type, you are still one of the shapes above, but you might feel like none of the descriptions above fits perfectly to you
- Eva Longoria (aka Petite): again, this is not really a body type, but since you’re 162cm or shorter, it’s difficult for you to find clothes that fit, so I have some recommendation for you too
What dress suits your body type the best?
Your waistline is your strength, and you might want to visually narrow your hips. Also, you want to elongate your legs and emphasize your breast or shoulder line to balance your hips. How to do that?
To emphasize your shoulders or breasts, you want to wear a dress that is decorated in this area with lace or frills. Or a very good option would be a bustier dress.
Make sure, that your skirt is rather basic, no decoration or frills in the area of your hips. Ideally, the skirt is hanging and the dress emphasizes your slim waist, like A-line dresses.
To elongate your legs, you should wear high heels and your skirt should go to the ground.
In case you can apply any of it, these are the features that fit you well:
- padded shoulders
- bold neck dress
- off shoulders dress
Your waist and hipline are your strengths because they are rather narrow. On the other hand, you might feel like your shoulders are too wide.
The way to optically hide that is to wear one shoulder dress. Another way to hide your shoulders is to wear your hair in the front.
On the other hand, halter dress is not the best choice, if you don’t want to emphasize your body type.
Bring the attention somewhere else and show your beautiful legs, long dress with high size split are perfect for you. Or emphasize your hip line with a tulle type of skirt. You also want to elongate your total height, so high heels are a good idea.
These are the features that suit you well:
- long sleeves with cleavage
- loose top, where you can’t see the waist clearly
- racerback dress
This is the body shape of most models. Even though you don’t need to hide any of your body parts, you probably want to make yourself look curvier.
You can basically shift yourself to any of the other types. If you want to look like Scarlett Johansson, narrow down your waist and emphasize your breast and hip area. If you want to look more like Naomi Campbell, emphasize your shoulders and bust area.
There are several styles that suit your type especially well:
- asymmetric dress
- spaghetti straps and minimalist style
- peplum dress
If you don’t want to emphasize even more how slim you are, avoid wearing really tight dresses.
Your strong parts are your legs and also your arms. On the other hand, you might feel like your waist isn’t slim enough.
To draw the attention from your waist to your breast, wear cleavage. Also, dresses that are decorated at the level of your shoulder and breasts or have drapery at this area looks amazing on you. You can hide the waist in a dress with asymmetric drapery along the whole body.
You can also intentionally accent your waist in order to make it look slimmer. Empire waist dresses are a great choice for you. But the ultimately best for your body type are peplum dress.
In case you’re getting married in spring or autumn, putting a bolero on top of your wedding dress is a great strategy. Just make sure it fits the overall style of your dresses.
On the other hand, if you’re getting married in summer, you are the perfect type to display your arms.
In general, you should definitely go for tight kind of dress to show your body curves.
It might be a bit tricky to find something that fits your curves perfectly. Even though I advise all brides to have their dresses fitted, you are the one I would recommend it even stronger to.
It will look three times better and you will look gorgeous on your wedding day.
Try to identify the parts of your body you like the most. And don’t say none, because you ARE beautiful. 🙂
A friend of mine is a plus size, but she always looks FABULOUS. She knows how to dress and also how to wear the right accessories. Go have a look on Adele at the Brit Awards 2016 and tell me she doesn’t look beautiful.
Anyway, when you make it clear to yourself what body type from the above ones you are, you already know the best tips for you.
Additionally, these are the tricks that most of plus size celebrities use:
- empire waist
- long wide sleeves – huge fashion hit this year (and they have the dresses on the right in 15 different sizes!)
- elongate legs with high heels and down to floor skirt
Again, since this is not an actual body type, you should still recognize, which body type from the above mentioned you are and read corresponding recommendations. But there are several tips for shorter women in general.
But there are several tips for shorter women in general.
You probably want to look higher than you are, so high heels are your essentials. Also, you don’t want to optically cut your body in the middle. Move the waistline higher to elongate the legs, e.g. the empire waist, or lower to elongate your body.
You look great in down to floor dresses with long train. Also, you don’t want your dress to start at your breast, because that optically shortens you. Instead, go for one shoulder dress or halter dress.
Even plunging v-neckline looks amazing on you, like the one above at Adele style.
So this is it…
Now you know what kind of dress you should look for. Maybe you have a different idea of what you would like. That’s alright, you don’t need to obey this advice strictly. Just try to find a dress that will emphasize the parts you like about yourself.
You will also see on your own, how you look and feel like in different dresses. If there is one good piece of advice I can give you, choose wisely who you take to your dress trials with.
Going with friends is a lot of fun for sure. But keep in mind that they are your friends, they will be nice to you and compliment you. Some of them might be a little bit jealous, that you have all the attention, and not give you their honest advice. And also they are not buying the dress for themselves so they are more likely to approve you dresses that aren’t absolutely perfect for you.
Take someone you can trust and who will give you 100% honest opinion. Someone who is not afraid to be critical. This could be your mom as well as your sister. Or a best friend, depending on how long you know each other.
Are they season appropriate?
Obviously, your dress should differ when you’re getting married in the middle of summer or at the end of autumn. It’s not just about the length of the sleeves and skirt but also about the material.
There’s not much more to add, just make sure you won’t be boiling hot or freezing cold in the dress you choose.
Do they fit the wedding theme?
This is also rather short note for you to keep in my when making the choice.
If you want to have a beach wedding, the dress will look very different from the one you would be wearing on a royal styled wedding taking place in a church.
Take this into account already when you’re planning your wedding theme.
Maybe you already know what kind of dress you want to wear and there’s no way you would change to something else. Then make sure your wedding themes fit your dream dress.
